April 10, 2015 (Rancho San Diego) –The Códice Borbónico is a pictorial story depicting the life of Mayan, Aztec, and other Native Americans. It is now on a special exhibit at the Heritage of the Americas Museum at Cuyamaca College.

The original, housed in the Vatican, was painted by Vatican priests.  This gorgeous hand-painted replica folds out to almost 50 feet and is accompanied by a book which describes the importance of the Códice, a description, its history, and more.

Museum staff discovered a newspaper article from April 1999 describing the Códice.  The article explained that it was housed in the library. However, the task of finding it among the extensive collection proved to be easier said than done.  After some searching, the Códice was found and the decision was made to display it so all can enjoy its beauty.

A codex is a grouping of many pages of paper, papyrus, or other material bound together on one side with the pages often folded. The use of the codex became popular by the sixth century and eventually replaced the scroll as the dominant form for book writing.

The museum is located on the campus of Cuyamaca College, 12110 Cuyamaca College Drive West, in the Rancho San Diego neighborhood of El Cajon.   Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for seniors (55+) and free for students or children under 18.
